Dear Kathy – Be advised that pot is about as addictive, habit forming as you put it, as soft drinks. Nowhere near on the scale of opioids, tobacco, or alcohol. I have no idea if it would help with opioid addiction, but it couldn’t hurt.

I absolutely DO want to make Maryland a sanctuary state.

YOU ARE NOT REPRESENTING A MAJORITY OF YOUR CONSTITUENTS IF YOU VOTE NO. REMEMBER THIS AT RE-ELECTION TIME. You are hearing from the most vocal conservatives to vote no but they are not the majority. I’m a member of several large MD political organizations and we want you to vote YES!

Your position on the Maryland Trust Act is shameful and misleading. The Maryland Trust Act does not protect criminals. In fact, it is designed to improve safety by creating trust between immigrant communities and state and local law enforcement. The rape that occurred in Rockville High was awful, but leveraging it for political gain is a disgrace. Sadly crime happens, but there is no evidence whatsoever that immigrants are a greater crime risk than the general population. There is nothing in the Maryland Trust Act that prohibits the government from pursuing criminals, including deporting them if these criminals turn out to be undocumented immigrants.

I have lived in Harford County for nearly a half century, during which time I have faithfully paid real estate taxes on time, every time.

I am now 76 years old, and for health reasons I had to retire last year, thus my income is quite limited and property assessment increases, which are often unrealistic, have increased my taxes to the point where they now consume a significant portion of my Social Security income, yet I get little or nothing in return for my tax dollars.

As you are probably aware, there are many states that have eliminated real estate taxes for individuals over 65 years of age. At that age, we no longer have children in school, we rarely drive, and use few if any county resources. Where I live we have no public sewage or water, no country trash collection and a volunteer fire department. The snow plows get to our development several hours after the snow stops, then plow in the end of my driveway.

In light of the above information, we, the senior contingent of Harford County and Maryland, request that you, and your fellow councilmen, enact legislation that would eliminate real estate taxes for individuals over 65 years of age. Granted, this will have some impact on the county budget, but I seriously doubt that it will be significant, and I’m confident that any shortfall could easily be made up by some judicious cuts in other areas of the budget.

The argument will, obviously, be made by some that education would suffer. However, I look at it in a different light. As the county residents age, and no longer have children in school, the folks that should be paying the education bills are those that HAVE children in school, NOT the grandparents who have paid for a half century and often more.

    RE: Great, Horrible & Ugly

Thanks for the legislative summary. However, I don’t know why we keep pumping more and more money into education with no improvement. We need the federal and state governments to get out of the education business and allow private/religious organizations to take over. We also need to abolish the Department of Education!
