Say NO to making MD a Sanctuary State

Despite my best efforts, the liberal legislators in Annapolis passed HB 1362 in the House of Delegates to make Maryland a Sanctuary State. The horrific news of the 14 year old high school girl who was violently raped last week by two of her fellow students – both here illegally -- had little effect. I, along with every other Republican and five Democrats, VOTED NO. This is beyond politics at its worst, it is dangerous when liberals in Annapolis are prioritizing the rights of criminal illegal aliens over protecting Maryland citizens.

Now I am asking you to stand with me tell the Senate they MUST SAY NO to making Maryland a Sanctuary State.

SIGN THE PETITION

The liberal legislators in Annapolis have absolutely failed the 14 year old high school student who was VIOLENTLY raped last week by two of her fellow students -- both here illegally -- with the passage of HB 1362 that makes Maryland a Sanctuary City.

I, along with every other Republican and five Democrats, VOTED NO. Even more shockingly my fellow Minority Leader Nic Kipke proposed an amendment that would have prevented this from covering terrorists or felons, but that too was rejected on a party line vote by delegates.

This is beyond politics at its worst, it is dangerous, when liberals in Annapolis are prioritizing the rights of criminal illegal aliens over protecting Maryland citizens.

Now I am asking you to stand with me tell the Senate they MUST SAY NO to making Maryland a Sanctuary State. Our only hope is to defeat this bill in the Senate and your voice is important!

Monday was Crossover – too many bills!

With less than three weeks remaining in the 2017 legislative session, bills needed to get out of the House of Delegates by Monday at midnight. So many bills passed this week – and some good bills died.

Redistricting Reform

Governor Hogan's redistricting reform bill was voted down on Monday. I voted for this bill, but the vote was strictly along party lines. There is a bill coming out of the Senate that would tie Maryland's redistricting to other surrounding states. This is ridiculous. Maryland's legislative districts have nothing to do with surrounding states and our congressional districts should be created for Marylanders and no one else. This is tom-foolery by partisan liberals in Annapolis who want to pretend as though they support redistricting. If there is one issue supported by people and special interest groups on both sides of the aisle, it's honest redistricting. The time to fix Maryland's gerrymandering is NOW.

Maryland has the distinct reputation as one of the most gerrymandered states in the USA! The 3rd congressional district held by John Sarbanes is one of the worst in the country. Amazingly, former Governor O'Malley admitted that Maryland has a gerrymandering problem even though he created the current mess!

Section 8 Housing - making it mandatory

Masked under the facade of anti-discrimination, Monday night the House passed a bill requiring landlords to accept Section 8 vouchers in your neighborhood. Section 8 vouchers is a government subsidized program and they do require additional paperwork, inspections, and costs to landlords.

Baltimore County Council was required to consider a measure similar to the bill that passed under a settlement with the US Department of Housing. Baltimore County Council voted 6 against and 1 for the measure. The citizens of Baltimore County weighed in heavily on this issue locally and they were opposed. I offered an amendment to HB 172 on the House floor exempting jurisdictions that have voted on this issue. This amendment failed as the heavy hand of Annapolis has overruled Baltimore County's well considered vote.

If a landlord does not want to jump through government hoops to rent a property, that should be their choice. Claiming that it's discriminatory for those who do not want to take on that extra expense is insulting to people who have rental properties. Putting government vouchers in the anti-discrimination class with gender, age, marital status, race and other protected classes is inappropriate on many levels. Allowing landlords to respect a neighborhood's concerns about overconcentration of Section 8 will be overruled if this bill passes.

I am opposed to this bill and hope the Senate defeats it.

How about some good news?

I'm thrilled to help the Phoenix Wildlife Center secure funding to get their new facility fixed up so they can move in this year. This wonderful wildlife rescue center works in the entire Baltimore region saving injured bald eagles and other wildlife. We were able to get a $100,000 grant for them to finish the repairs to a house in Phoenix. I cannot wait to volunteer there and I will share that information when it's available.

Senator John Salling, Delegate Jay Jacobs and I ran into Governor Hogan on our way to work on Thursday. We snapped a quick selfie, high fived each other, and went to work for the citizens of Maryland!
