The Pride of Baltimore 2 - docked in Annapolis this week

Johns Hopkins Police Force

This week, we passed a bill from the House of Delegates to allow Johns Hopkins Hospital and University to create its own police force. I voted YES.

Crime in the City, especially violent crime, is a tremendous problem. Baltimore City has not been effective at reducing the crime that escalated after the Freddie Gray riots in April, 2015. It’s been four years and crime continues to plague Baltimore City.

Johns Hopkins Hospital rates in the top five hospitals world-wide on an annual basis, often ranking #1. Johns Hopkins University is also a nationally ranked university, both undergraduate and medical school. If Baltimore City is not able to protect the students, patients, families, physicians, healthcare workers, it is reasonable to permit Johns Hopkins to step in and keep people safe.

This may be the only bill passed this year in Annapolis to address the violent crime issue in Baltimore City.

MVA - your drivers’ license upgrade

Your Maryland driver’s license needs to be Real ID compliant by October 1, 2020.

Having a REAL ID compliant driver’s license or ID card will be necessary to board commercial aircraft or gain access to federal facilities.

To be considered REAL ID compliant, you must have the required documents on file with the Maryland Department of Transportation Motor Vehicle Administration (MDOT MVA). To find out if your driver’s license is Real ID compliant, visit the REAL ID Lookup Tool.
http://www.mva.maryland.gov/realid/realidlookup.htm

You will need a number of original documents to get your updated driver’s license. The MVA has increased the number of appointments available by 2,700 per week. If you go online and make an appointment, you are guaranteed to be seen within 15 minutes of your scheduled time.

Collect all the documents you will need and then go online and make your appointment. If your license is expiring, you are required to upgrade to the Real ID. Do not wait until the last minute to renew your license as you may not have all the documentation you need on-hand, and you will have to wait in a long line without an appointment.

Customers are encouraged to make an appointment on the MDOT MVA website, and after collecting documentation visit a local branch to become REAL ID compliant.

Physician Assisted Suicide bill

The Physician Assisted Suicide bill, also known as The End of Life Options Act, failed in the Maryland Senate this week by a vote of 23-23.

After scores of amendments were added to the bill in the Senate Judicial Proceedings Committee, and hours of debate on the floor of the Senate, a vote was taken and it was narrowly defeated.

I was opposed to the bill for many reasons and voted against the bill in the House of Delegates. The bill failed to protect vulnerable senior citizens who could be talked into ending their life by greedy heirs or others. As a prolife legislator, I have compassion for those who may be suffering from painful life-ending conditions and will work to ensure there is great hospice and palliative care available for anyone who would need it. I will always work to preserve life and provide medical and spiritual care to those in need.
